Harmony Non-Latex Dams are oral dams made from polyisoprene instead of latex, so people with a latex sensitivity can still use a barrier for oral sex. Each pack holds six individually wrapped dams, every one a generous 6 × 10 inch sheet in a natural, see-through-ish colour with a light scent.

What oral dams are for

A dam (often called a dental dam) is a thin, flat sheet you lay over the vulva or anus during oral sex. It acts as a barrier between mouth and genitals, lowering the chance of passing on sexually transmitted infections that spread through skin contact and fluids. Sensation still comes through; the sheet is thin enough that warmth, pressure and movement are easy to feel.

Why polyisoprene

Most dams are latex. Polyisoprene is a synthetic rubber with a similar soft, stretchy feel, but it doesn't contain the natural latex proteins that cause reactions. Harmony describes it as an option for people with latex allergies or sensitivities. The 6 × 10 inch size is larger than many dams, which makes it easier to keep in place without your fingers creeping onto the wrong side.

How to use a dam

Open the wrapper carefully with your fingers (not teeth or scissors) and check the sheet for tears. Decide which side faces the body and keep it that way for the whole time; never flip it over. Hold the edges flat with your hands. A few drops of water-based lube on the body side makes the sheet glide and helps sensation come through. Use a fresh dam if you move between the anus and the vulva, and throw each one away after use. Dams are single-use only.

Lube and storage

Harmony doesn't publish lube compatibility, so stick with water-based or silicone lube and avoid oils, which weaken rubber barriers. Store the pack somewhere cool and dry, away from wallets, glove boxes and direct sun, and check the expiry date on the box before use.

Helpful Information

Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful answers about Harmony NON-Latex Dams - 6pk.

What is a dental dam and how do you use it?

It's a thin sheet held flat over the vulva or anus during oral sex as a barrier. Keep the same side against the body throughout, hold the edges in place, and use a new one when you switch areas or finish. Each dam is single-use.

Are these oral dams safe if I'm allergic to latex?

They're made from polyisoprene, a synthetic rubber without natural latex proteins, and Harmony offers them for people with latex allergies or sensitivities. If you've had a severe reaction before, check with your doctor or pharmacist first.

Which lube can I use with polyisoprene dams?

Water-based lube is the easy choice, and a drop on the body side helps sensation come through. Silicone lube is also commonly paired with polyisoprene. Avoid oil, petroleum jelly and massage oils, which weaken rubber barriers.

Can I cut a condom instead of using an oral dam?

You can in a pinch by cutting off the tip and slitting it lengthwise, but you end up with a smaller sheet. A 6 × 10 inch dam covers more area and is easier to hold in place.

Do the dams have a taste or smell?

They're lightly scented, which helps mask the rubbery smell some barriers have. They aren't flavoured, so add a flavoured lube on the mouth side if you want a taste; just check it's water-based.

How many dams are in a pack?

Six, each sealed in its own wrapper, so you can tuck one in a bag or bedside drawer without opening the rest. Check each wrapper is intact and in date before use.
