A bullet vibrator, often just called a bullet vibe, is a small, simple vibrator, usually about the size of a lipstick, designed for focused external stimulation. Because it's small, quiet and easy to hold, it's one of the most common first toys, and it works for solo play and with a partner. Here's how to use a bullet vibrator in 10 steps, plus where to use it, whether it can go inside, and how to use one with a penis. To compare models while you read, browse our bullet vibrators.
Where can you use a bullet vibrator?
Anywhere on the outside of the body that enjoys vibration:
- Vulva: clitoris, clitoral hood, labia and the vaginal opening.
- Penis and testicles: the frenulum (just under the head), along the shaft, the scrotum.
- The perineum, the area between the genitals and anus, for any body.
- Elsewhere: nipples, inner thighs, neck and lower back.
Can you put a bullet vibrator inside?
Check your manual. Most bullets are designed for external use. Some, such as G-spot bullets, are shaped for shallow vaginal use. Never use a bullet anally. Anything that goes in the anus needs a flared base so it can't slip inside; choose a butt plug made for that instead.
How to use a bullet vibrator: 10 steps
1. Charge it and read the manual
Charge it fully before the first use. Check three things in the manual: how the buttons change speed and pattern, whether it has a travel lock, and its water rating. "Waterproof" and "splash-proof" aren't the same thing.
2. Get comfortable
Give yourself private, unhurried time. Being relaxed and a little aroused first, from touch or fantasy, makes vibration feel much better than starting cold.
3. Add a little lube
Lube isn't required, but a small amount helps the bullet glide instead of dragging on skin. Water-based lube is the safe choice for every material; our water-based lubes are a good start. Silicone lube can damage silicone toys, so check the manual before using it.
4. Start on the lowest setting
Begin on the gentlest speed. It's easy to go up and hard to recover from too much too soon. If even the lowest setting feels strong, use it over your underwear.
5. Warm up around the area
Run the bullet over the inner thighs, lower belly or nipples before moving to the most sensitive spots. On a vulva, start on the labia or over the clitoral hood rather than directly on the clitoris. On a penis, start at the base or the scrotum.
6. Use the tip or the side
The tip gives pinpoint, intense sensation. Laying the side flat against you spreads the vibration over a wider area and feels softer. Try both.
7. Change pressure, speed and pattern
Pressing harder makes vibration feel deeper and more rumbly; lighter pressure feels buzzier. Spend a little time on each pattern, too. Many people prefer a steady setting near orgasm.
8. Try different positions
- On your back with knees bent: easy to reach and relaxing.
- On your stomach with the bullet held in place under you, which adds pressure without effort.
- Sitting or kneeling, which changes the angle.
- In the bath or shower, but only if it's rated waterproof.
9. Use it with a partner
A bullet is small enough to fit between two bodies, so it adds vibration without getting in the way.
- During penetration, either partner can hold it on the clitoris. Positions where your bodies aren't pressed together, such as being on top or lying on your side, make this easier.
- On a penis, hold it against the frenulum or the base of the shaft, or on the perineum.
- In a vibrating ring. Some cock rings have a slot for a bullet, so both partners feel the vibration during sex.
- Hand over control. Letting your partner run the speed is playful even with a basic bullet; remote or app-controlled vibrators take it further.

10. Clean and store it
Clean it after every use. If it's waterproof, wash it with warm water and mild soap or a toy cleaner. If it isn't, wipe it with a damp cloth and keep water away from the charging port. Let it dry fully, then store it in a pouch. Our toy cleaning guide covers each material.
If it feels numb or too strong
Brief numbness after strong vibration is common and wears off. Turn the speed down, add a layer of fabric, or switch to your hands for a while. Stop if anything feels painful or irritated.
Choosing a bullet vibrator
- We-Vibe Tango X: deep, rumbly vibration in a compact shape.
- Hot Octopuss AMO: angled tip for pinpoint stimulation, waterproof according to the maker.
- Je Joue Classic Bullet: low, rumbly vibration, waterproof and rechargeable, with a finger sleeve included.
- Dame Zee: slim and simple with 3 speeds. It's water-resistant rather than waterproof, so wipe it clean instead of rinsing.
