A gallon of Wet Original water based lubricant is a lot of lube, and that's exactly the appeal: it's for couples, busy households and toy collectors who get through bottle after bottle and would rather refill than reorder. Inside is Wet's long-running Original gel, clear and unscented, which washes off with nothing more than warm water.

What Wet Original feels like

It has a gel-like body that stays where you put it instead of running down your wrist, then turns smooth and silky once it warms on skin. Wet's pitch is that it stays wet longer than thinner water-based formulas. Even so, any water-based lube can start to drag over a long session as the water evaporates; a few drops of water or a little extra gel brings the slip back. It dries without leaving a sticky or greasy film.

A water based lubricant for every toy in the drawer

Water-based formulas are the default for toys because they don't react with silicone. Wet lists Original as silicone-safe and latex-safe, so one container covers silicone dildos and vibrators, glass, metal, hard plastic and latex condoms. That flexibility is what makes a bulk size practical: you never have to check which bottle goes with which toy.

Getting the amount right

Start with roughly a coin-sized blob and warm it in your palm for a few seconds, because gel poured straight from a cold jug is a shock. For toys, coat the whole shaft rather than just the tip, and add a little to your body as well. Since it's water-based, you'll top up more often on long sessions than you would with silicone, which is one more reason a bulk container comes in handy.

Living with a gallon

Pouring from a full jug at the bedside is a recipe for a spill. Decant a week or two's worth into a small squeeze or pump bottle with a clean funnel, or keep the 9 oz Wet Original as your everyday bottle and top it up from here. Close the big container after each refill and keep it away from heat and sunlight. Our supplier doesn't say whether a pump comes with the gallon, so plan on decanting.

Clean-up and ingredients

Warm water rinses it off skin, toys and most fabrics, no soap required, and it comes out of sheets in a normal wash. The ingredient list is short: glycerin, water, pentylene glycol, cellulose gum and potassium sorbate. If you already know glycerin doesn't agree with you, pick a glycerin-free formula instead. There's no flavour or scent, so it won't compete with anything else you're using.

Who should size down

If you're still working out which lube you like, a gallon is a big commitment; try the 16 oz bottle first; it's also far easier to pack for a trip. Shower and bath play is the other exception: water rinses this gel away quickly, and a silicone lube holds up far better when you're wet.

Helpful Information

Frequently Asked Questions

Helpful answers about Wet Original Water Based Lubricant 1 Gallon.

How long does a gallon of lube last?

That depends on how often you use it, but a gallon is about 3.8 litres, many times the volume of a standard bottle. Keep it sealed, store it away from heat, and check the expiry date printed on the container so you aren't holding more than you'll use before then.

Can I use Wet Original water based lube with silicone toys?

Yes. Wet lists it as silicone-safe, and water-based formulas don't soften silicone the way silicone lubes can. It works with glass, metal and hard plastic too, which makes it the easy all-rounder for a mixed toy collection.

Is this a good water based lubricant for condoms?

Wet lists it as latex-safe, so it pairs with latex condoms, and water-based lube is also the usual choice for non-latex ones. Add a little to the outside once the condom is on, and top up before it dries rather than after.

Why does water-based lube get tacky?

As the water in the gel evaporates on warm skin, what's left starts to drag. Rather than piling on more gel, add a few drops of water or saliva to bring the slip back, then top up with a small amount of lube if you still need it.

Does Wet Original work for anal play?

It works, but you'll reapply more often than with a silicone formula, so use a generous amount and keep the bottle close. If you want something longer-lasting and your toys aren't silicone, the Wet Platinum gallon is the silicone counterpart.

Will it stain sheets?

Water-based gel generally rinses out of fabric with warm water and comes out in a normal laundry cycle. That's one of the main reasons people keep a water-based lube for bedroom use and save silicone or oil for the shower or massage.

How do I dispense lube from a gallon jug?

Use a clean funnel to fill a smaller squeeze or pump bottle, then close the jug again. Smaller bottles are easier to use one-handed, and keeping the main container sealed most of the time keeps the rest of the supply clean.
