More Canadians are asking the same question before they order a sex toy: is this store actually Canadian? It's a fair question, but the answer can mean three different things. A store can be Canadian-owned, sell products made in Canada, or simply ship from inside Canada, and those don't always go together. Here's how to tell them apart and check any store before you buy.
Three labels that mean different things
| Label | What it means | Why it matters to you |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian-owned | The business is owned and registered in Canada | Your money goes to a Canadian business |
| Made in Canada | The product was manufactured here | Rare for sex toys; most are made overseas, wherever the brand is based |
| Ships from Canada | The parcel starts its trip inside Canada | No customs forms, duties or brokerage fees, and usually faster delivery |
A store can be one, two or all three. A US store with a ".ca" address may ship from the US; a Canadian-owned store may ship from a Canadian warehouse while selling international brands.
Why most sex toys aren't made in Canada
Most sex toys, including those from well-known brands, are manufactured in Asia, regardless of where the brand is headquartered. That's true of most stores in Canada, including ours. A few small makers do produce toys here, often in silicone, and they usually say so clearly on the product and the packaging.
If "made in Canada" matters to you, check the product listing and the box for a country of manufacture, not just the store's location.
How to check any online store in five minutes
- Find the company name. Look at the footer, the terms of service or the privacy policy. A real business names its legal entity.
- Check where it ships from. The shipping policy should name the carriers and say where orders leave from. Canada Post, UPS or Purolator from a Canadian address means no customs.
- Look at the currency. Prices in CAD with tax calculated at checkout is a good sign. Prices converted from USD can change at checkout.
- Read the return and defect policy. Intimate products usually can't be returned for a change of mind, but a good store covers defects and explains how to claim.
- Check what's on the box and your statement. A discreet store tells you the packaging is plain and names the billing descriptor.
Why "ships from Canada" saves you money
When a parcel crosses the border, it can attract duties, taxes and a brokerage fee that the carrier collects before delivery, sometimes more than the shipping itself. Ordering from a store that ships within Canada avoids that, and the price you see at checkout is the price you pay. It also means your parcel never goes through a customs inspection.
